Wilmington, NC – The 13th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team had its worst round of tournament, shooting 19-over 307 to fall back to 15th place at the NCAA Championships taking place at the Country Club of Landfall in
Wilmington, N.C. UVa's 54-hole score stands at 28-over 892. The 72-hole tournament concludes Friday. Virginia entered Thursday’s third round in seventh place.

“We did not play well today, but I know they have it in them,” said UVa coach Kim Lewellen. “They played phenomenal yesterday and they have played a lot of good rounds this spring so we’re going to think about those rounds and the times we have played well and forget about today completely. Everyone has a bad round. Usually as a team we don’t have them all on the same day and today we did. Hopefully tomorrow we can come out and really put it together.”

The Cavaliers enter Friday’s final round with a three-day total of 28-over 892.  Virginia shot 294 and 291 in the event’s first two rounds.

Purdue overtook USC to grab the team lead at 6-under 858. The Trojans are second at 1-over 865 and Arizona State and Alabama are tied for third at 7-over 871.

Virginia was led Thursday by freshman Brittany Altomare who shot 2-over 74. She is in 23rd place at 3-over 219. Nicole Agnello carded a 6-over 78 to drop back to 36th overall at 6-over 222. Calle Nielson is in 74th place at
227 that included a 9-over 81 during the third round. Joy Kim is 84th at 228 after shooting 76 Thursday. Lauren Greenleif shot 79 and is in 101st place at 231.

Arizona State’s Jennifer Johnson leads the field at 9-under 207. Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall is in second place at 208.

“We have a young team with three freshmen playing here, so if we can rally and finish in the top 10, that would be great,” Lewellen said. “That will be our goal going into tomorrow. We need to get everybody in a great frame of mind to play well in the final round.”

Virginia will play in the morning wave and will tee off at 9:06 a.m. along with Duke and Pepperdine from the first tee.
