Arseneault Wins Western Amateur

Newnan, GA - Virginia senior Jennie Arseneault (Grinnell, Iowa) won the 108th Women’s Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship Saturday. The six-day tournament, that included 36 holes of stroke play and a 64-person field in match play, was held at Canongate at Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan, Ga. The Western Am is considered one of the nation’s top women’s amateur tournaments. The event starts with 144 players from around the country.

Arseneault defeated Mary Narzisi, a sophomore at Minnesota (Omaha, Neb.), 1-up in the finals of match play. She was awarded the W.A. Alexander Cup as the tournament champion.

In the quarterfinals Arseneault defeated Laura Crawford of Lancaster, S.C. 5 and 4. She advanced to the championship match by downing Cavalier teammate Calle Nielson 2-up in the semifinals.

Nielson shot 141 to finish second in the 36-hole stroke play portion of the tournament that seeded the field for match play. Arseneault tied for third in stroke play at 142 while UVa junior Whitney Neuhauser was seventh at 144. Carly Truitt and Eleana Collins both shot 150 during stroke play.

Neuhauser was eliminated during the round of 32 in match play. Truitt and Collins lost in the round of 64 in match play.
