CHICAGO, Ill. -
University of Virginia golfers Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W. Va.) and Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) have been named to the 2004 All-American Scholar Team, the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) announced.
Recognized with this prestigious honor were 318 women's collegiate golfers from Division I, II, and III. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in collegiate athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) is 3.50, and student-athletes mush have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Last week, Robinson won the 2004 Women's West Virginia State Amateur Golf Tournament at Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke (W.Va.). A starter in all nine tournaments for Virginia as a true freshman last season, Robinson averaged 80.96 strokes as a first-year collegian. Her best tourney finish was 30th at the ACC Championship where she fired a 232. Robinson also earned Academic All-ACC honors.
Wigger will compete at the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur on August 9-15 at the par 72 Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa. One of three freshmen to be named to the 12-member All-ACC Women's Golf Team, Wigger was instrumental to Virginia's success during its inaugural season in 2003-04. Named the team's Golfer of the Year, Wigger paced UVa with a 76.80 stroke average. She tied for 11th at the ACC Championship to pace UVa with a 217 (+4), the lowest 54-hole total by any Cavalier all season. She fired two rounds of a season-low 71 at the conference tourney. Wigger also earned Academic All-ACC honors.
Playing as an amateur, Wigger won the 2003 Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship at the Wigwam Resort Gold Course on Dec. 30.
In its inuagural season in 2003-04, the women's golf team sported the second highest GPA among Virginia's 25 sports with a 3.35 team average (volleyball had a 3.37 GPA). All six Cavalier freshmen were named to the Academic All-ACC Team.
Virginia opens the 2004-05 season at the Cougar Fall Classic on Sept. 13 in Charleston, S.C.
