No. 14 Cavalier Women's Golfers Prep for The Fall Preview

Charlottesville, VA The 14th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team opens its 2008 fall season at the prestigious NCAA Fall Preview Sept. 7-8 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The teams are scheduled to play 36 holes Sunday and 18 holes Monday.

The 16-team field includes 15 teams ranked in Golfweek’s preseason top-25, including seven teams in the top-10.

Virginia’s lineup will include seniors Jennie Arseneault (Grinnell, Iowa) and Kristen Simpson (Norfolk, Va.), junior Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.) and sophomores Calle Nielson (Nashville, Tenn.) and Joy Kim (Duluth, Ga.). Senior Lene Krog, who led UVa in stroke average last season, will not participate due to an injury she suffered during practice this week.

“With everyone back from last season, it will be very competitive for our team to qualify for tournaments this season,” said UVa second-year coach Kim Lewellen. “Our players had a fantastic summer playing in some of the best tournaments around the country and they are all excited to compete in a field this strong. This is a tremendous opportunity to play at the site of this year’s NCAA Championships. We need to take advantage of it and do everything we can during the year to make sure we come back in May.”

The Fall Preview is annually held at the site of the NCAA Championships. The invitations to the field are made based on the finish at the previous year’s NCAA Championships and status as the host institution. Virginia placed 12th at the 2008 NCAAs, the best finish in school history.

The Fall Preview field includes host Georgetown, No. 10 Alabama, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 24 Arkansas, No. 16 Auburn, No. 6 Denver, No. 3 Duke, No. 11 Florida, No. 9 Georgia, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Purdue, No. 4 Southern California, No. 18 Texas A&M and No. 12 Wake Forest.

Duke won the event in 2007 while USC’s Dewi Claire Schreefel took medalist honors. USC is the reigning NCAA Champion.

The NCAA Championships will be held at Caves Valley May 19-22. The course was the host site for the men’s 2005 NCAA Championships and the 2002 U.S. Senior Open.

Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com
