The Virginia women's golf team opened the 2004-05 season on Monday with a spectacular showing. After two rounds, the Cavaliers are in third place out of the 16-team field.
Tennessee is leading the event after a two-round score of 581 (+5). Louisiana State is two strokes back at 583 (+7). The Cavaliers are in third place after rounds of 294 (+6) and 293 (+5) gave them a total of 587 (+11). Furman is one stroke behind at 588 (+12).
Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza is the individual leader at 139 (-5). Cavalier Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) is in second, as her rounds of 70 (-2) and 71 (-1) gave her a total of 141 (-3). Wigger's first-round 70 is her career-low. LSU's Vicky Meyer and Furman's Theresa Paik are tied for third at 142 (-2).
Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is tied for sixth after rounds of 74 (+2) and 70 (-2) gave her score of 144 (E). Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) debuted with rounds of 76 (+4) and 73 (+1). She is tied for 22nd at 149 (+5). Sophomore Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) finished the day tied for 40th after rounds of 74 (+2) and 79 (+7) gave her a total of 153 (+9). Sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) is tied for 51st at 155 (+11) after rounds of 76 (+4) and 79 (+7).
