CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia women's golf team is ranked No. 20 nationally in the first rankings of the 2005-06 season, Golfweek.com announced.

The Cavaliers, under the guidance of third-year head coach Jan Mann, jumped from a final ranking of 28 last season to their current rank of 20 to open the season. The highest ranking that the Cavaliers, in their third season, ever received was a No. 14 showing in the first poll last fall.

In its first tournament, UVa captured fifth place at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 12.

Individually, junior Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) is ranked No. 39 nationally, while sophomore Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) is ranked No. 51. At the Cougar Classic, Wigger paced UVa with a 217 to tie for third, while Mielbrecht followed by one stroke to tie for sixth.

The Cavaliers return to action on Oct. 7-9 at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
