UVa Golfers Off to Fast Start at UNC

Chapel Hill, NC The Virginia women’s golf team is in sixth place after the opening round at North Carolina’s Lady Tar Heel Invitational. The Cavaliers shot 11-over 299 and only trail tournament-leading Wake Forest by four shots. The 54-hole tournament is being held at UNC’s Finley Golf Course.

Virginia was led Friday by a pair of 1-over 73s from Lene Krog and Calle Nielson. They are tied for ninth heading into Saturday’s second round. Nielson’s round was her first in a collegiate tournament. and featured a pair of birdies on her final two holes.

Virginia’s Kristen Simpson shot 76 and is in 32nd place, Whitney Neuhauser carded a 77 and stands 41st and Carly Truitt posted an 82 to finish the day 84th.

Tulsa’s Michaela Cavener took the early lead in the hunt for medalist honors. She posted a 4-under 68 to grab a two-shot lead. Tulsa trails Wake Forest by one stoke in the team scoring while Vanderbilt and Tennessee are tied for third at 297. Georgia is one shot ahead of UVa at 298. Defending NCAA Champion Duke is three shots behind the Cavaliers while the homestanding Tar Heels are in 11th place.
