Cavaliers Open Tar Heel Invitational in Seventh Place

Chapel Hill, NC - The ninth-ranked Virginia women's golf team opened the first round of play at North Carolina's Tar Heel Invitational by shooting 2-over 290 to stand in seventh place in the 18-team field. Alabama took the early lead by shooting 11-under 277. LSU is second at 285 and Duke and Florida are tied for third at 288.

Virginia was led by sophomore Brittany Altomare's 4-under 68. She is in fourth place. It marked the fourth time in seven rounds this fall she has carded an under-par score.

Calle Nielson is 13th at 71, Portland Rosen, in her collegiate debut, is in 42nd place at 74. Lauren Greenlief and Nicole Agnello are tied for 74th at 77.

Alabama's Brooke Pancake shot 7-under 65 to claim a two-shot lead after the first 18 holes.

The second round of the tournament is slated for Saturday and the final round will take place Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
