INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Virginia women's golf coach Jan Mann has been appointed as chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee, the Championships/Competition Cabinet announced.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as chair of the women's golf committee," Mann said. "Collegiate golf has opened many doors for me, and while it will be a huge time commitment serving as chair, I look forward to giving back to the sport."

The Women's Golf Committee's primary duties include appointment of regional advisory committees for the evaluation of teams throughout the season, selection of all participants for the Division I Golf Championships, determining the location and format of regional and national championships, and overseeing the regular season tournaments.

Recognized as one of the top golf instructors in the country, Mann became the first women's golf coach at the University of Virginia in June 2002. This fall, she is guiding the Cavalier team through its inaugural season.

Mann has served on the NCAA Women?s Division I Golf Committee since 2000 and also co-chairs the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the NGCA Education Committee. Golf Digest recognized her in 2000 and 2001 as one of the top teachers in North Carolina.

Prior to joining the Virginia staff, Mann was the head coach at UNC Wilmington for the eight seasons. She led the Seahawks to their first-ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2002 as well as to the Big South Conference championship. Mann was named the 2002 Big South Coach of the Year.

Virginia competes in the Landfall Tradition on Oct. 31- Nov. 2 in Wilmington, N.C.
