UVa Golfers Finish Match Play Championships with Win vs. USC

Kissimmee, FL The fifth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team ended the 2008 National Golf Coaches Association Match Play Championships with a 4-1 victory over defending NCAA Champion USC to place seventh in the 16-team field.

Duke won the event for the fifth time in six years, dropping Alabama 4-1 in the finals.

In the Virginia match, Calle Nielson defeated Jennifer Song 2 Up, Joy Kim beat Caroline Kim 3&2, Kristen Simpson knocked off Ah Park 1 Up and Eleana Collins bettered Shelcie Takenouchi 2 Up. Lizette Salas picked up USC’s lone win with a 2 Up win over Whitney Neuhauser.

The Cavaliers are off until March 13 when they open the spring portion of their schedule at LSU’s Cleveland Classic Invitational.
