CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 6 Virginia women's lacrosse team found itself on the wrong end of six ties and six lead changes, as No. 10 Penn State (3-1) escaped Klöckner Stadium Sunday with a 15-14 win.
After winning the first two draw controls, UVa quickly took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Dana Boyle. Tatum Coffey put Penn State on the board for the first time at 22:57, but Morgan Stephens retaliated at 20:25, giving UVa back a two-goal lead, 3-1.
Mackenzie Cyr scored back-to-back goals for Penn State to commence a 4-1 run for the Nittany Lions, giving PSU its first lead of the game, 5-4. The spurt by Penn State turned the contest into a game of runs.
UVa scored the next four goals to head into the intermission with a commanding 8-5 lead. Ashlee Warner started the run, followed by back-to-back goals by Caroline McTiernan and Daniela Eppler capping the run with 36 seconds left before halftime.
Penn State burst out of the break with a 6-0 run, taking an 11-8 lead on Virginia. Kelly Lechner capped the run with 20:21 left in the game. Virginia came bouncing right back, using a 4-0 streak to retake the lead, 12-11. Anne Thomas started the run on a pass from Boyle. Penn State used another 4-0 run to retake the lead for good, 15-12. Coffey started the run by tying the game at 9:21. Coffey scored again during the run and Jenna Mosketti finished the Penn State scoring at 4:11.
Virginia made a stellar attempt at coming back, registering two quick goals on unassisted scores by Boyle and Casey Bocklet. UVa committed a violation on the ensuing draw control at 1:47 and Penn State was able to run out the clock, securing the triumph.
UVa won the battle of shots (36-30), ground balls (17-15), draw controls (16-15) but had seven yellow cards to Penn State's one. UVa had 12 turnovers, while Penn State had nine.
