Women’s Lacrosse Opens ACC Play at No. 5 Syracuse

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at No. 5 Syracuse (6-0, 1-0 ACC) on Sunday (March 5) at 4 p.m. at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Sunday’s game will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra and can be viewed through ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app. Links for the stream, as well as live stats, are available on Virginiasports.com. 

On Thursday, Virginia cruised to a 17-9 win at William & Mary. The Cavaliers used a 10-0 run to open the second half that helped secure the victory. Sophomore Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) led UVA with six points on three goals and three assists.

UVA is third in the conference in caused turnovers per game (12.25) and fourth in draw controls per game (15.00) and ground balls per game (21.00). Senior Besser Dyson (Alexandria, Va.) is third in the ACC with 2.00 assists per game, which ranks 29th nationally. Junior Kasey Behr (Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlin Luzik (Alexandria, Va.) are both second in the league with 2.00 caused turnovers per contest. 

Virginia leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 11-8. Syracuse has won the last seven meetings between the two teams, including a 14-8 victory on March 8, 2016 in Charlottesville. Virginia’s last win in the series was a 9-7 victory on Feb. 26, 2012. UVA is 6-3 at Syracuse, with the last road win coming on Feb. 27, 2011. The Cavaliers won, 21-11.

Syracuse most recently defeated Northwestern, 5-3, on the road. Riley Donahue leads the Orange in points, with 22 (11 goals, 11 assists). The Orange lead the league in points per game (24), assists per game (7.60) and scoring margin (8.60). Nicole Levy and Emily Hawryschuk lead the way with 13 goals each. Defensively, Natalie Wallon had 17 ground balls and a team-high 11 caused turnovers. Morgan Widnery leads the nation with 11.80 draw controls per game.

Virginia will close out its road trip next Saturday, March 11 at No. 2 North Carolina at noon. The match will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.
