CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 14 Virginia women's lacrosse team (4-5, 0-2 ACC) faces its fifth top-10 opponent, playing at No. 8 Duke (6-3, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. Virginia is trying to win back-to-back games for the first time this season and is also seeking its first ACC win after starting conference play 0-2. The Cavaliers are 1-3 this season against teams ranked in the top-10 after upending another team ranked No. 8, Penn State, 12-11, on March 1.
Virginia leads the all-time series against Duke, 20-11. Last season, the Cavaliers downed the Blue Devils 10-7 in a must-win game in the ACC Tournament, a victory that guaranteed UVa having the .500 record necessary to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Duke won the 2013 regular-season meeting in Charlottesville, 13-7. In 2012, Virginia won the regular-season meeting at Duke, 14-12, but was eliminated by the Blue Devils in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Durham, 11-9.
Duke has won its last three games by an average differential of +12.7 including a 21-2 victory over Davidson last Thursday (March 13). The Blue Devils have outscored opponents 71-39 in the first half this season. Duke leads the ACC in shooting percentage, making 54.3 of its attempts, and also has the fewest turnovers per game (11.11). Virginia makes 43.8 percent of its shots and averages 13.38 turnovers per game.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) is third in the ACC, averaging 3.13 goals per game. Duke's Kerrin Maurer is fourth, averaging 3.11. Maurer is also fourth in assists, averaging 1.78 per game. Maurer is third in the ACC in points per game at 4.89.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) leads the ACC in saves, averaging 11.0 per game. Duke's Kelsey Duryea is second at 8.0 per game.
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) had her sixth hat trick of the season against James Madison. Blue has scored seven goals in the last two games. She came into the week ranked eighth in the ACC, averaging 2.75 goals per game.
Junior Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) had back-to-back four-point performances in the two games last week, scoring three goals with an assist at William & Mary and scoring a season-high four goals at Princeton. Stephens, who averages 2.50 points per game, has had a goal or an assist in each of the last eight games. This week, Stephens scored the game-winner against JMU on Wednesday, her second game-winning goal of the season, while also adding an assist.
Senior captain Maddy Keeshan (Greenwich, Ct.) had two goals and an assist against JMU.
Next up, The Cavaliers play back-to-back midweek home games, returning to Klöckner Stadium on Wednesday, March 26 when they host Old Dominion at 7 p.m. followed by a Tuesday, April 1 game against American, also at 7 p.m.
