Charlottesville, Va.--The University of Virginia will host both the women's and the men's Atlantic Coast Conference Lacrosse Tournaments this weekend in Charlottesville. The women will play semifinal games on Saturday, April 18 on the University Hall Artificial Turf Field. The men's semifinal games will be held on Friday, April 17 in Klockner Stadium. Sunday, April 19 is Championship Sunday with the women's final game on the Artificial Turf Field at 1:00 p.m., and the men's championship game in Klockner Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
Three of the top four women's teams in the country will participate in the 1998 ACC women's lacrosse tournament. The first semifinal is a battle between the top two teams in the country. Defending ACC and national champion Maryland, ranked second in the country but fourth in the conference, will face the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina defeated Maryland 10-9 in the second game of the season for both teams. In that game, Maryland was ranked first and North Carolina was ranked second. The 1997 ACC runner-up Virginia Cavaliers, led by Head Coach Julie Myers, will face Duke in the second women's semifinal game which will take place at 3:30 p.m. These two squads met last week in Durham as Virginia blitzed the Blue Devils with a 13-3 win. Nationally, Virginia is ranked third and has received the second seed in the tournament while Duke is ranked tenth nationally and seeded third in the tournament. Virginia, Duke, and Maryland all finished the regular season at 1-2 in the conference and a blind draw was held to determine the seedings for the tournament. In the 1997 tournament, Maryland came from behind to defeat Virginia 11-10.
The men's tournament features the same matchups but with different seedings. Top-seeded and second-ranked Maryland will play fourth-seeded North Carolina (#14 nationally) in the first semifinal game, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Maryland defeated North Carolina 12-11 earlier this season in Chapel Hill. In the later semifinal, the second seed and fifth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers will face the third-seeded Duke Blue Devils, who are ranked sixth nationally. Duke and Virginia met last Saturday with Virginia eking out a 12-11 triumph. In the 1997 tournament, the Virginia Cavaliers won their first ACC Championship with a 12-6 defeat of Duke.
Ticket prices for the tournaments have been set at $6 for adults and $3 for youth
