The University of Virginia women's rowing team won three of five races in competition with Princeton and Southern California on Lake Carnegie on Saturday (April 30). Virginia won the second varsity eight, the varsity four and the second varsity four races. UVa's second varsity eight and varsity four are undefeated this spring.
The Cavaliers' 10th-ranked varsity eight gave top-ranked Princeton a battle in that competition. Princeton won the race with a time of 6:25.2 followed by Virginia (6:27.5) and #13 Southern California (6:33.1). UVa's varsity eight was comprised of Launa Forehand (coxswain), Catelyn Coyle, Ashley Jones, Margaret Matia, Andria Haneman, Carolyn McMillan, Kerry Maher, Katie Yrazabal and Melanie Kok.
"In the varsity eight race, we came closer to number one Princeton than anyone all year," said Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer. "When you consider the competition was on Princeton's home water, it was a significant race for us. We lost by two-thirds of a length. It was a great race by our varsity eight."
UVa's second varsity eight finished in a time of 6:29.2 to defeat Princeton (6:33.5) and Southern California (6:42.9). The Cavaliers' second varsity eight was made up of Katie Hilton

"Our second varsity eight took the early lead and sat on the lead the entire race to win by open water," Sauer said. "Princeton's second varsity eight also had a very good race."

Virginia's varsity four finished first with a time of 7:16.6 followed by Southern California (7:20.4) and Princeton (7:45.8). UVa's varsity four was comprised of Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Katrin Sydlik, Allison Brennan and Mieke Pitts.
"Southern California raced us hard all the way down the course," Sauer said. "Our four did a great job to stay undefeated."
The Cavaliers' second varsity four had a time of 7:41.4 to defeat Princeton (7:49.5). Virginia's second varsity four was made up of Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Anna Samaha, Jennifer Furstenau, Vicki Moore and Abby Lynch.
Princeton won the novice eight race with a time of 7:01.4 followed by Virginia (7:04.1) and Virginia "B" (7:37.3). UVa's first novice eight was comprised of Mary Eddy (coxswain), Lindsay Arnold, Maria Micocci, Diane Leigh, Kelsie Chaudoin, Lindsey Fletcher, Adrienne Egge, Kirsten Graslie and Schafer Bomstein. The Cavaliers' second novice eight was made up of Lia Bradley (coxswain), Megan Haughs, Liz Welsh, Katie Haney, Laura Laycock, Sarah Tweedt, Sara Peeling, Rachel Beck and Jessica Merlo.
The Virginia women's rowing team does not return to action until May 14-15 when the Cavaliers participate in the South/Central regional competition in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
