SEATTLE, Wash.--The No. 3 Virginia rowing Varsity Eight was edged by Washington's top crew in a battle for the Windermere Cup Saturday morning (May 2) on the Montlake Cut.

The Cavalier crew finished in a time of 6:32, three seconds behind Washington in 6:29. Virginia had a slim lead at the halfway point, but the Huskies made a strong move to pass UVa and earn the win.

"It was a great experience," UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. "It was a tough, short trip but a fantastic opportunity! We had a great first half, but Washington had a better second half of the race for the win. Thanks to Windermere, the University of Washington and Coaches Ernst and Callahan for their hospitality."

The Windermere Cup, which is run as part of Seattle's Opening Day Regatta, the official start to the city's boating season, has been contested every year since 1987 and the Washington women have won the cup each of the last nine years. In the men's race, New Zealand's world-champion under-23 crew defeated Washington and Columbia.

Next up, the Cavaliers will compete in the ACC Championships May 15-16 in Clemson, S.C., on Lake Hartwell. Virginia is the five-time defending champions and has won 14 of the 15 ACC Championships.
