No. 2 Rowing Competes At Pac-10 Challenge Saturday and Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE Fresh off a season-opening sweep of Bucknell at home last weekend, No. 2 Virginia rowing heads to the Pac-10 Challenge, presented by Windermere, at the Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City, Calif., for Saturday and Sunday competition.

Virginia’s Varsity Eight is set to race at 9:24 a.m. local time on Saturday, followed by the Second Varsity Eight at 10:28 a.m., the Varsity Four at 11:16 a.m. and the Novice Eight at 12:12 p.m. Action will continue through Saturday and wrap up on Sunday.

Highlighting the Pac-10 Challenge field in addition to No. 2 UVa is No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Princeton, No. 9 California, No. 10 Stanford, No. 12 Harvard, No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 Notre Dame, Loyola and Georgetown.

“We are excited about the level of competition at this regatta and looking forward to getting a chance to race against some west coast teams,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “Stanford will be a great host.”

In its season-opener, the team won four varsity races and swept the novice events against Bucknell Friday (March 21) at the Rivanna Reservoir.

Virginia’s Varsity Eight earned a first-place finish with a time of 6:39.2, while the Varsity Four (7:37.4) and the second Varsity Four (7:51.8) also had strong showings for victories. Virginia’s “B” boats in both those races came in second place, with the Bison coming in third.

The second Varsity Eight was also victorious with a time of 6:51.9.
