Virginia Claims ACC Crew of the Week Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE After defeating Pac-10 powers California, UCLA and Stanford over the weekend, Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Crew of the Week.

At the Pac-10 Challenge on Saturday, March 28, UVa’s Second Varsity Eight rowed to a victory over California with a winning time of 6:31.7. The Golden Bears’ time was 6:34.9. Later that afternoon, Virginia defeated UCLA, 6:52.8 to 7:16.2.

The Cavaliers made it a perfect 3-0 weekend when they defeated Stanford on Sunday, March 29. UVa’s winning time was 6:48.3, compared to Stanford’s time of 6:50.5.

Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight over the weekend was coxswain Cristine Candland (Greenwich, Conn.), Lauren Shook (Grosse Point Park, Mich.), Claudia Blandford (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Helen Tompkins (Friendswood, Texas), Christine Roper (Reading, St. James, Jamaica), Susie Chalker (Mercer Island, Wash.), Nora Phillips (Arlington, Va.) and Shalane Carlson (Nanaimo, British Columbia).

On the year, Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight is an undefeated 4-0, having also defeated Bucknell in the season opener on March 20.

Virginia’s rowing squad is back in action on Saturday, April 4 at Lake Monticello vs. Ohio State. Races begin at 9 a.m.
