PRINCETON, N.J.—Three members of the No. 5 Virginia rowing program, seniors Sarah Jordan and Brandy Herald and junior Lizzy Youngling, have been accepted to the 2014 USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp, USRowing announced Tuesday (May 6). Virginia was the only school in the country to have three student-athletes selected to the camp.
At the Under-23 National Team Selection Camp, the trio will compete for spots in the women’s eight and women’s quadruple sculls crews that will represent the U.S. at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships July 23-27 in Varese, Italy. In addition, the camp may select crews in the women’s four, pair and double sculls that will compete at the USRowing Under-23 National Team Trials June 22-25 in West Windsor, N.J. A full team roster will be named in early July.
Herald, a native of Portland, Ore., was a member of the UVa Second Varsity Eight that finished fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2012 and helped the Cavaliers win the team national title. She has been a part of the Varsity Eight at the Head of the Charles that has finished as the top collegiate boat three consecutive years (2011-13). This spring, she has rowed in the V8 that has been twice named ACC Crew of the Week. Herald captured two gold medals with the United States women’s eight at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships.
A native of Flourtown, Pa., Jordan has been the coxswain of the Virginia V8 the past two seasons. Jordan was named to the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-South Region First Team and the All-ACC squad in 2013. She coxed the V8 that was named the 2013 ACC Crew of the Year and coxed the Varsity Four that finished second at the 2011 NCAA Championships. She also led the 2V8 that included Herald and placed fifth at the 2012 national regatta.
Youngling, a native of Westport, Conn., was in the bow seat of the UVa V8 that was named 2013 ACC Crew of the Year and has been in the V8 this entire season. She was part of the 2V8 that won the petite final and finished seventh overall at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Youngling competed for the U.S. in women’s double sculls at the 2013 World U23 Championships, placing seventh. She also rowed for the U.S. Junior National Team at the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Championships in the women’s pair and quad, respectively.
The Cavaliers travel to Clemson, S.C., for the ACC Championships on May 16-17. Virginia has captured four consecutive conference titles and has won 13 of the 14 ACC regattas.
