SEVILLE, Spain—Former Virginia rower and Dutch Olympian Inge Janssen (Class of 2010) earned a bronze medal at the 2013 European Rowing Championships, which were held May 31-June 2 in Seville, Spain.

In her first international regatta competing in the women’s single sculls (W1x), Janssen earned bronze in the final on June 2 with a time of 8:21.30. Janssen passed Nataliya Dovgodko of Ukraine in the last 250m and held off Frida Svensson of Sweden to take home her first international medal in senior competition. Janssen earned bronze as part of the Netherlands’ women’s pair (W2-) at the 2011 World Under-23 Championships in Amsterdam.

The Czech Republic’s Mirka Knapkova claimed gold in 8:15.48, while Austria’s Magdelena Lobnig was second in 8:18.24.

Janssen qualified for the final after winning her heat on May 31 in 7:49.00 and finishing third in the semifinals on Saturday in 8:37.26.

Janssen finished seventh with the Dutch W2- at the 2012 Olympics on Eton Dorney in London. She is the second former Cavalier to compete at the European Championships, joining Katrin Reinert (Class of 2011), who earned silver as part of the German women’s eight (W8+) in 2007 in Poznan, Poland.
