LUCERNE, Switzerland—Former Virginia rowing standouts Susanne Grainger and Christine Roper earned gold medals at the World Rowing Cup III regatta Sunday (July 12) in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Grainger (Class of 2013) and Roper (Class of 2011) were part of the Canadian women’s eight that captured gold. It is the third senior international gold medal for Roper and second for Grainger. Both were part of the women’s eight that won the title at the WRC III regatta in 2014, while Roper also earned gold in the women’s pair at the World Rowing Cup I event in 2014.
It is the eighth medal of Roper’s career in World Rowing Cup series competition and the sixth for Grainger. Both were a part of the Canadian eight that placed second at the 2014 World Championships and third at the 2013 world regatta.
In the women’s quad, Inge Janssen (Class of 2010) earned bronze with the Dutch crew. The 2012 Olympian also earned bronze in the event at the WRC I regatta.
Katrin Reinert (Class of 2011) placed seventh with the German women’s eight.
