Newport News, Va. - Six Virginia student-athletes have been named members of the 2012 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) Academic All-State Team, the association announced Wednesday (July 11). The Virginia student-athletes include Sarah Borchelt (rowing), Anna Corrigan (cross country/track and field), Lauren Greenlief (women's golf), David Karasek (men's swimming and diving), Maggie Kistner (women's soccer) and Matt Snyder (wrestling). The team includes 156 student-athletes from 26 state schools. Each school was allowed to nominate six individuals who had to be at least a sophomore and have a minimum grade point average of 3.25. Borchelt, Corrigan and Snyder were named to the 2011 academic all-state squad, while Greenlief, Karasek and Kistner have been honored for the first time.
Borchelt, a nursing major from Sterling, Mass., was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year in 2012. The graduated senior, who was a two-year team captain, earned Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large First Team honors in 2012. She was a part of the Second Varsity Eight that finished fifth and helped the Cavaliers win the 2012 NCAA Championship. Borchelt has been named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete each of the last three years.
Corrigan, a systems engineering major from Burke, Va., was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team. The graduated senior helped the Cavalier women's cross country team to its third NCAA Southeast Region Championship in four years in the fall, placing 10th and earning All-Southeast Region accolades. She scored at the NCAA Championships, helping the Cavaliers earn a 20th-place finish, and was the individual champion of the season-opening Lou Onesty Open. In the indoor track and field season, she earned All-ACC honors with a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the conference meet.
Greenlief, a graduate student studying commerce from Oakton, Va., was named to the 2012 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team. She was also selected following the 2010 season. Greenlief earned her undergraduate degree in economics in three years and competed as a graduate student in 2012. This season, she played in nine tournaments and helped the Cavaliers to a fourth-place finish at the NCAAs. She was the female student-athlete recipient of UVa's ACC Scholar-Athlete Award at UVa's All-Sports Banquet.
Karasek, an education major from Meisterschwanden, Switzerland, was named the 2012 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A graduate student now studying professional development, Karasek won titles at the 2012 ACC Championships in the 200-yard individual medley and 200 freestyle, setting a new Virginia school record in the 200 IM. Also a member of the victorious Cavalier 800 freestyle relay, Karasek finished his career with five ACC individual event titles and was a member of four team championships.At the national level, Karasek earned All-America honors on Virginia's fourth-place 800 freestyle relay as well as honorable mention accolades as a member of the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. He was an All-American in the 200 freestyle with his seventh-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. He will compete for Switzerland in the 200-meter IM at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Kistner, a psychology major from St. Louis, Mo., was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District First Team and was one of 36 recipients of the ACC's Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarships. The graduated senior started all 24 games as a central defender and led Virginia's field players with 2,196 minutes played. She was named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Soccer squad for the second time in 2011.
Snyder, a kinesiology major from Lewistown, Pa., was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team and was honored as the 2012 ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 2012 ACC Champion at 125 pounds, Snyder finished the year with a 24-5 record, including a team-high eight falls. After capturing the ACC championship, Snyder was the No. 11 national seed at 125 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He went 2-2 at NCAAs, with both losses coming in narrow decisions to fellow seeded wrestlers. Snyder lived on the Lawn at UVa this year - one of the highest honors bestowed upon a Virginia student. He earned his bachelor's degree in May and has plans to enter the medical field once his wrestling eligibility has ended.
