CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Seven former and current student-athletes of the Virginia rowing program will compete at the World Under-23 Rowing Championships, which will be held in Trakai, Lithania, from July 11-15.
The seven Cavaliers mark the highest amount ever to compete at a single international regatta and UVa has had at least one current or former member compete at the World Under-23s every year since 2005.
A total of 56 countries will be represented at the regatta, including 308 crews and 815 competitors. Live results will be available at worldrowing.com.
Four Cavaliers, including class of 2012 graduates Martha Kuzzy and Cara Linnenkohl, senior Kristine O'Brien and junior Carli Goldberg will compete for the United States, while Christine Roper (Class of 2011) and senior Susanne Grainger will represent Canada. Freshman Holly Nixon will row for Ireland at the regatta.
"UVa women's rowing is proud to have seven former and current student-athletes representing their countries and our university at the World Under-23 Championships," head coach Kevin Sauer said. "In addition, Jon Furlong of the men's club program is also representing UVa and USA as the lightweight single sculler."
O'Brien will compete as the stroke seat in the women's eight for the U.S., a year after finishing seventh with the women's quad. Kuzzy will be a member of the women's quadruple sculls and was fifth in 2011 as a part of the women's four.
Linnenkohl and Goldberg won the women's double sculls at the U.S. Under-23 Trials on Mercer Lake in New Jersey in late June and will face off against Nixon, who will row for Ireland in the event.
Roper and Grainger, members of the Canadian women's eight that claimed gold a year ago, will row in the women's 4- (without a coxswain) this year.
