CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The reigning national champion Virginia rowing program has released its 2012-13 schedule, head coach Kevin Sauer announced Thursday (Sept. 20).
“We always look forward to racing, so the fall part of the year gives us a chance to see how we are doing,” Sauer said. “The spring schedule is challenging because we see four Varsity Eight finalists and seven of the top-11 teams from the 2012 NCAA Championship.”
The Cavaliers will compete in three regattas in the fall, starting with the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston on Oct. 21. UVa’s Varsity Eight won the Championship Eights last year, while the Varsity Four was the top collegiate finisher in the Championship Fours (second overall).
After the Head of the Charles, the Cavaliers will head to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Chase on Oct. 28. UVa will conclude the fall schedule with the Rivanna Romp on Nov. 11 at the Rivanna Reservoir. All three regattas will be head races where boats will start single file and results will be based on time.
The UVa spring schedule begins with a scrimmage against Michigan State on March 9, a week before the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite, in Oak Ridge, Tenn., March 16-17.
The Cavaliers will head out west for the San Diego Crew Classic April 6-7, where UVa’s Varsity Four finished first and the Varsity Eight placed second in 2012.
Virginia will compete in the Clemson Invite April 20-21 before hosting its only spring regatta, the UVa Invitational, on April 27 at Lake Monticello. Michigan State and Wisconsin are slated to compete.
The ACC Championships have been moved back a few weeks from previous years and will be contested on May 12 in Clemson, S.C.
Virginia will look to defend its national title at the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., May 31-June 2. The Division I national regatta will now feature 22 teams, as opposed to 16 like in years before to accommodate more conferences that have earned automatic-qualification status to the championship.
The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight captured its first national championship in school history and became the eighth UVa boat to win overall. Virginia won the NCAA title for the second time in three years. The Cavaliers won their first team crown in 2010.
