CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 4 Virginia women's soccer team captured the 2013 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic title with a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (6-0) concluded their non-conference schedule with a perfect record for the first time since 2004 with the victory, while the Pirates fell to 1-4-1.
Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) had two goals and an assist to lead Virginia to the win, while sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) added a goal and an assist against the Pirates.
"We are certainly happy with the result and I thought we played better throughout the 90 minutes than we did on Friday," said head coach Steve Swanson. "I thought Seton Hall was very athletic and physical, especially in the back, and that was a challenge. I think what stands out today is the quality of our finishing. We created some really good chances and usually we have put those in the back of the net this year. Overall, I thought the effort was good and we moved the ball well, we just lacked a little bit of finishing."
Virginia wasted little time taking the lead, finding the opening goal in the third minute. Brian's ball over the Seton Hall defense found Doniak in stride and she fired in her fourth goal of the season. The Cavaliers doubled the advantage in the 22nd minute with Brian's first goal of the afternoon. Quick passing between Doniak and junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) resulted in Colaprico threading a pass to Brian, who finished her chance into the upper corner.
The Cavaliers added one more goal after halftime in the 62nd minute. After senior forward Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) was shoved to the ground in the box, Brian took the resulting penalty kick and buried her fifth goal of the season. It was Brian's fourth career multi-goal game.
Overall Virginia outshot Seton Hall 36-3 and had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Pirate goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew made a Virginia Nike Soccer Classic single-game record 15 saves in the contest, eclipsing the previous record of 12 by Kristen Samuhel of Richmond, set against the Cavaliers in 1999. Freshman Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) and senior Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) each played a half in goal for Virginia, recording a save a-piece as the Cavaliers posted their third consecutive clean sheet.
Colaprico, who had two goals in Friday's 6-0 win over Rutgers, was named the MVP of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by Brian, Doniak and senior midfielder Kate Norbo (Roanoke, Va.).
"I think we are in a good place heading into the ACC," said Swanson. "We feel good about the results we have had in the past three weeks. We have created a lot of chances and scored a lot of goals against some very good teams. It is a good sign but we now have to see how much better we can get."
The Cavaliers will open ACC play on Thursday as they host conference newcomer Syracuse. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast online at VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live (subscription required).
