Cavaliers Down #4 Notre Dame 4-1 in Preseason Opener

MAPLE CITY, Mich. - The Virginia women's soccer team began its 2010 preseason schedule Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame at Miles Kimberly Park. The game was played over 120 minutes using four 30-minute periods.

The 17th-ranked Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the fourth-ranked Irish during the first 30 minutes. Virginia opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a goal by Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.), on an assist from Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.). In the 23rd minute, the Cavaliers doubled their lead on a goal by Alwine, assisted by Lenczyk.

The score remained 2-0 into the third 30-minute period. In the 65th minute, Emily Perrin (Charlottesville, Va.) extended the Virginia advantage to 3-0, as she scored off a feed from Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.).

Each team scored a goal in the fourth period. Mandy Laddish got the Irish on the board with a goal in the 117th minute, but the Cavaliers answered a minute later as Colleen Flanagan (Downingtown, Pa.) scored on an assist from Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) to make the final score 4-1.

"I thought the energy level from everyone was great today," said head coach Steve Swanson. "We did some good things. We moved the ball well at times, but not consistantly; but we scored some great goals. There were a lot of positives, but we realize that we still have a way to go to be ready for our season opener next week. We can take a lot from this game, especially playing such a strong opponent like Notre Dame."

The Cavaliers host James Madison in their final preseason game on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. The regular season opens on Friday, August 20 when the Cavaliers host Liberty at Klöckner Stadium at 7 p.m.
