It marks the 12th consecutive season for Virginia to make an appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Cavaliers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by Rutgers.
The game is a rematch of a regular-season meeting between the two teams. Georgetown won that contest 3-2 at Shaw Field after the Cavaliers built a two-goal lead early in the first half. It was the first loss of the season for Virginia and marked the first goals conceded this season by the Cavaliers.
Virginia advanced with a 3-0 win over Penn State on Friday as the Cavaliers raced past the defending NCAA Champions. Georgetown advanced with a 2-0 win over Rutgers to set up the rematch.
In Friday’s contest against the Nittany Lions, Virginia got a first-minute goal from senior Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.) before sophomore Betsy Brandon (Littleton, Colo.) added a second goal to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead at halftime. Freshman Taylor Ziemer (Santa Rosa, Calif.) capped the scoring with a second half goal for the final margin of victory.
Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) leads Virginia with 13 goals and seven assists for a total of 33 points. She is joined on the attack by junior Veronica Latsko (Venetia, Pa.) and Ziemer with eight goals each. The Cavaliers have scored 52 goals this season while surrendering only 16 goals.
Cox joins with seniors Tina Iordanou (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) and Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.), and junior Megan Reid (Orinda, Calif.) in anchoring the back line. The quartet combines with senior Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) in goal for a formidable defense that has posted 11 shutout victories this season.
Georgetown has scored 58 goals and allowed only 14 on the season. Grace Damaska leads the squad with 14 goals and is one of four players with double-digit goals this season. Arielle Schechtman in goal has posted 13 solo shutouts while the Hoyas have posted 15 shutouts total this season.
The winner of Sunday’s match will face the winner of the region’s other match between Santa Clara and NC State.
