UVa earns split with Radford

Zagol throws one-hitter to earn victory in Game One

RADFORD, Va. - Stacey Zagol allowed just one hit in eight innings as the Virginia softball team split a doubleheader with Radford this afternoon at Radford. Virginia won Game One 2-1 in eight innings, before Radford took the 'nightcap' by the score of 3-2.

Zagol entered the seventh inning of the first game with a perfect game, but with two outs Radford's Melissa Pickel earned a walk. But Zagol struck out the Highlander's Macy Price to end the inning and enter extra innings with a no-hitter still intact.

In the top of the eighth, Kristi Fox singled to leftfield to put runners at first and third. After Fox stole second, Julie Amaon ended a slump with a double to left which scored Stacy Holmes (from third base) and Fox to give UVa a 2-0 cushion. As it turned out they needed that cushion as Radford pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth. Chastity Chronick singled with one-out to end Zagol's no-hit bid. But Zagol rebounded by retiring the next two batters to pick up the win.

Timely hitting, highlited by RBIs from Melissa Pickel and Lori Reilly, helped Radford hold off the Cavaliers in the second game, 3-2. Virginia outhit the Highlanders 9-4, but did not score until the top of the seventh when Corrine Good (3x4, RBI) scored Cory Bolkan with a single. Radford's Sheree Fletcher ended the Cavs rally by retiring the final two hitters to pick up the win. Chrissy Quinn took the loss despite allowing just four hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Virginia travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend to take on North Carolina in a three-game set beginning Friday afternoon.
