Virginia Softball Team Sweeps Terps
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Christina Quinn (Buckingham, Pa) threw a no-hitter and Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa.) allowed just two hits as Virginia swept a doubleheader from Maryland by the scores of 3-0 and 4-0. Zagol held the Terps to just two singles and faced just two more than the minimum in the first game, while Quinn was nearly untouchable in the nightcap.
Quinn (4-3) struck out 11 and walked four to end a personal three-game losing streak. Virginia (11-12, 4-2 ACC) did not commit an error on the afternoon and Quinn's defense was rarely tested. The closest Maryland (14-18, 1-5 ACC) came to a hit was in the first inning, when the game's first batter Amy Sandler hit a grounder deep into the hole between shortstop and third base, but UVa shortstop Lori Reese rounded the ball perfectly and threw out the speedy leadoff hitter.
After that a slew of popups and strikeouts were all the Terps could manage off Quinn. Quinn's no-hitter was the second of the season for the Virginia pitching staff. Zagol did not allow Florida a hit in the season-opener, but Virginia allowed an unearned run and lost 1-0 (March 7). The last time Virginia won a no-hitter was March 30, 1996. That day Cory Bolkan held Coppin State hitless as Virginia won 27-1.
Game Two's offense all came in the Cavaliers half of the first inning. Reese and Beth Crimi each had RBI singles before Mariruth Graham doubled in pinch-runner Rashida Williams to give UVa a commanding 4-0 lead.
Despite allowing two singles, Zagol (4-6) was just as effective in the first game as she fanned three Terps without allowing a walk. Stacy Holmes provided all the offense Virginia and Zagol would need in the fifth inning with a two-RBI double to left centerfield. Virginia scored one more time in the fifth when Reese hit a sac-fly to centerfield which scored Holmes from third to give the Cavs a 3-0 lead.
Sandler (1-for-6) and Annette Hunt (1-for-5) had the lone hits for Maryland on the afternoon.
Virginia hosts another Atlantic Coast Conference foe this weekend as Georgia Tech comes to The Park for a three-game series. A single game will be played Friday afternoon (3:00 pm) followed by a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Admission is free.
