Cavs Win One of Three in Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A three-run rally with two outs in the seventh inning lifted Virginia to a 3-1 win over North Carolina in the first game of a three game weekend series in Chapel Hill, NC. The Tar Heels rebounded to take the final two games of the set by the scores of 2-0 and 3-0. Virginia is now 8-9 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic coast Conference. North Carolina is 16-23 on the season.
Friday afternoon, UVa entered the seventh inning trailing 1-0. With Rashida Williams on first base and two out, the Virginia bats forced four Tar Heel errors before UNC could escape the inning. Williams, Kristi Fox, and Julie Amaon came around to score to give Virginia the 3-1 lead. Fox allowed just a harmless single in the bottom of the seventh as Virginia picked up it lone win on the weekend. Fox improved to 3-2 on the season.
Saturday, Jennifer Klesaris' RBI double scored two run as UNC took the first of two games, 2-0. The Cavaliers wasted a fine outing from Stacey Zagol (2-5), who allowed just three hits on the afternoon. Amy Peay and Julie Amaon collected two hits each for UVa.
Megan Smith, Klesaris, and Lorin Slade had RBI singles as the Heels completed the Saturday afternoon sweep of the Cavaliers with a 3-0 win. Brandy Arthur limited the Cavs to just two hits as she out-dueled UVa's Christy Quinn (3-2). Tish Tablan and Quinn collected the only hits for the Cavaliers. Quinn allowed seven hits while fanning five Heels in defeat. The final game of the series did not count in the league standings.
The Cavaliers return to action this weekend when they travel to Florida for doubleheaders against #15 South Florida (Friday, April 4) and #18 Florida State (Sunday, April 6).
