Pennsylvania Pitching Tandem Helps Cavs Sweep 49ers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched
a two-hitter in the opener and Christina Quinn (Buckingham, Pa.)
allowed just two runs in five innings in the nightcap as Virginia
swept a South Atlantic Softball Association doubleheader from
UNC-Charlotte by the scores of 2-0 and 4-2. Mariruth Graham (Wall,
N.J.) keyed the offense in the opener with a two-run single and
Julie Amaon (Houston, Texas) did the same in the second game with an
RBI double to help Virginia sweep its fourth doubleheader of the
season.
Zagol (6-6) overpowered the 49ers in the opener as she allowed
just two baserunners while fanning seven batters. All 21 of the Cavs
putouts came from the Virginia infield. Brooks Bower's double and
Janine Repole's single to rightfield were the only UNC-Charlotte
hits to leave the infield. Virginia (15-14, 8-4 SASA) provided
Zagol with the only offense she would need in the first inning. The
Cavaliers loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before Graham
(1x3, 2 RBI) came up with a clutch two-out single to rightfield.
Quinn pitched well in relief of Kristi Fox in the second game.
Once again, the Cavalier bats sprung to life early in the game to
provide a lead. Christina Chiappe (1x2, RBI, BB) and Beth Crimi
(2x3, RBI) both provided RBI hits in the second and third innings,
respectively, and Virginia led 2-0. In the fourth, Amaon (1x2, RBI,
R) doubled home Graham (1x1, 2 BB, R), who had led off the inning
with single, and Virginia led 3-0. Two outs later Amy Peay (1x2,
RBI, R) singled up the middle to score Amaon and finish the
Virginia scoring.
UNC-Charlotte (29-21, 3-3 SASA) strung together three hits tin
the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2. Repole doubled to right center
field to score Sonya Stinson (3x4, R) and Ashley Kelly (2x3, R). But
Quinn settled down and induced a pair of groundouts to shortstop to
slip out of the jam. The 49ers stranded two more runners in the
seventh before Quinn (5-4) shut the door.
Virginia hosts the Cavalier Classic this weekend at The Park
(schedule below). Admission is free.
