Cavaliers End Season With 8-5 Win Over East Carolina
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Beth Crimi (Middle Island, N.Y.) hit a three-run home run and Stacy Holmes (Santa Barbara, Calif.) broke a 5-5 tie with a two-RBI triple as Virginia defeated East Carolina 8-5 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader played at The Park. The second game was canceled due to rain. With the win, Virginia finished the season with a 17 16 record. This is the Cavaliers ninth winning season in the last 10 years.
Crimi (2x2, 3 RBI, HR, 2 BB, R) gave UVa a 3-0 lead in the first inning with her second homer of the season. The shot to leftfield scored Amy Peay (3x4, 3 R) and Holmes. On the afternoon, Virginia finished with 13 hits, their highest output this season.
In the fourth inning, Lori Reese (1x4, RBI) singled home Holmes to give Virginia a 5-3 lead. But the lead was short lived as East Carolina (47-22) evened the score in an inning later when Tonya Oxendine (2x3, BB, 2 R) and Amy Hooks scored on a two-out throwing error by Reese.
Virginia took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth as Rashida Williams (1x1, R) sparked a two-out rally with a single to rightfield. After Peay followed with a single, Holmes (2x4, 2 RBI, 3B, 2 R) cleared the bases with a triple down the leftfield line to give Virginia a 7-5 lead. Holmes triple gave her the team lead in that category with three.
Christina Chiappe (1x2, RBI, HBP) provided an insurance run in the sixth inning when her two-out single scored Corinne Good (1x3, BB, R). Stacey Zagol (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) came in to pick up the win in relief of starter Kristi Fox. Zagol (9-7) won for the sixth time in seven decisions.
