Heidi Freitager-Kirkaldy is in her seventh year at Virginia as an assistant softball coach.

At Virginia, Freitager-Kirkaldy is in charge of the pitching corps and also spearheads all recruiting efforts. She is instrumental in alumni outreach and works closely with the marketing and promotions and media relations staffs to positively promote the program.

Freitager-Kirkaldy guided pitcher Melanie Mitchell to one of the best pitching careers in UVa history. Mitchell finished her career as UVa all-time leader in wins (79), strikeouts (1,101), complete games (117), innings pitched (942), appearances (161) and starts (144). She earned first-team all-region and first-team all-conference honors in 2010 and to the all-region first team in 2013.

Freitager-Kirkaldy arrived in Charlottesville after a one-year stint at Temple. Before her time in Philadelphia, she spent two years as the head coach at Everglades High School in Miramar, Fla. She led Everglades to the 2007 6A state championship while claiming two district titles. She also guided the West Pines Diamond Dusters 18 Gold squad during her time in Florida.

Prior to coaching in the high school ranks, Freitager-Kirkaldy served as an assistant at Nova Southeastern (2005), Morehead State (2004) and New Mexico State (2003). Freitager-Kirkaldy played at Northern Iowa (1997-2001) where she started at catcher for four seasons and led her team to the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2000.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in science in 2001 and later went on to earn a master's degree in sports administration from Morehead State in 2002. Freitager-Kirkaldy was inducted into the Irondale High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
