TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Virginia softball team fell to New Mexico 11-2 Friday (February 21) as the Lobos scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a close game. UVa falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in the Worth Invitational as the Cavaliers also suffered a 9-4 loss to Drake earlier Friday.

The Lobos struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Elena Cranmer led off the inning with a solo home run and Kelly Glass drilled a two-run single to account for the three runs.

Virginia cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Second-year catcher Jenn Wynn (Herndon, Va./Herndon) registered a RBI double and first-year designated player Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) followed with a run-scoring single to account for the Cavaliers' two runs.

The Lobos scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Iraina Ogas led off the fifth with a home run and then hit a grand slam later in the inning to end the game.

First-year Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) took the loss in the circle for Virginia. Horn (2-1) allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out four and walked four.

The Cavaliers continue action in the Worth Invitational on Saturday (February 22) when they play Oklahoma State and second-ranked Arizona at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. eastern time, respectively.
