CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell had a record day as the Virginia softball team defeated Boston College, 4-1, to claim the series Saturday (March 30) at The Park in Charlottesville. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 14-16 on the season (3-6 ACC), while the Eagles fell to 9-17 (2-5 ACC).
Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) tied Lisa Palmer for the most wins in UVa history with 74. The senior also became the first Cavalier and seventh Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. With 13 today in seven innings of work, Mitchell (11-9) has 1,008 for her career.
After BC scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the second with three runs. Sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.).
Fellow senior Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) earned a walk and classmate Lauren Didlake (Bowling Green, Va.) followed with her first career home run to right center to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 advantage.
Junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) added a solo shot to left field in the sixth inning for her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Boston College’s Chelsea Dimon (7-7) allowed four runs in six innings, but took the loss.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Fairfax, Va., for a doubleheader against George Mason on April 3 at 4 p.m.
