CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgia Tech (13-28, 6-10 ACC) used a seven-run fourth inning to help capture a 10-5, series-opening win over Virginia (14-29, 3-13 ACC). The win for the Yellow Jackets snaps a three-game winless streak.
Georgia Tech sent 12 batters to the plate and peppered the Virginia defense with nine hits in the top of the fourth. The game-changing rally plated seven runs and propelled the Yellow Jackets to an 8-2 lead. Georgia Tech starting pitcher Emily Anderson tossed a complete game and struck out four batters in her fifth win of the season.
After Georgia Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Virginia quickly tied the game up on a Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) RBI single that scored Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.). The next batter, McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.), drove in Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) with a sacrifice fly to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 advantage after one inning.
Despite three runs by Virginia in its final three at bats, the Yellow Jacket lead proved to be insurmountable. Senior Katie Park (Scottsdale Ariz.) drove in her team-best 22nd run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, solo home runs by Miller and Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) pulled the Cavaliers to within four. The home run by Miller was her sixth which moves her into a three-way tie for the team lead.
Smith also proved to effective in the circle, calming the Georgia Tech bats after the fourth inning eruption. She struck out the side in the top of the fifth and finished the game with a season-high, six strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Three Georgia Tech hitters recorded multi-hit games including Draven Sonnon who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Katie Krzus went 2-for-5 and in the top of the sixth, hit her third home run of the season.
The Cavaliers will look to even the series in tomorrow’s middle game of a three-game set with Georgia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at The Park. Saturday (April 15) is Military Appreciation Day and after the game kids can run the bases and stick around for autographs.
-Georgia Tech leads the all-time series against Virginia, 42-40.
-Smith combined with starter Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) for nine strikeouts, tying a team season-high.
-The Yellow Jackets have now won four-straight games against Virginia in Charlottesville.
-Tonight marked the third time this season the Cavaliers have given up seven or more runs in a single inning.
-Virginia drops to 5-6 when scoring in the first inning and 7-24 when an opponent plates the first run.
