Virginia Powers Past Georgia Tech In Doubleheader

ATLANTA  –  The Cavaliers used a powerful offense to push to a doubleheader sweep of Georgia Tech (18-29, 4-12 ACC) on Saturday as Virginia (18-29, 7-10 ACC) picked up a 6-0 win and a 13-1 win over the Yellow Jackets.

Virginia got 25 hits and 19 runs on the afternoon through the doubleheader and used five home runs to power to the series victory. The two teams will play the final game of the series at noon on Sunday.

Game 1
Virginia 6, Georgia Tech 0 

Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) picked up her 13th win of the season, improving to 13-18 on the season with the win in game one. Osherow pitched a shutout, allowing only three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 

Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) set the tone for the Virginia offense, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two steals in game one of the afternoon. She also scored two runs. Virginia out-hit the Yellow Jackets 10-to-3 for the game. 

Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) got the Cavaliers on the board with a two-out RBI single in the first. Park lifted the ball over the head of the third baseman, scoring Fitzgerald from second. Fitzgerald doubled in the previous at bat to set up the score.

Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) then hit a two-run home run to straight away center and the Cavaliers had a 3-0 lead on the Yellow Jackets. 

Danni Ingraham (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) extended the Virginia lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning to take the lead out to 4-0. 


 

 

Allie Arneson (Aledo, Texas) added to the lead in the sixth inning when the freshman delivered an RBI double to left center. Lexi Mettler (Turlock, Calif.) scored from second on the play after coming in to pinch run. Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went from first to third on the play and scored a batter later on a sac fly from Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.). The Cavaliers led 6-0 after the top of the sixth.

The Cavaliers kept the Yellow Jackets in check the rest of the way to grab the game-one win.

Game 2
Virginia 13, Georgia Tech 1

Osherow paced the offense in game two as Virginia picked up the run-rule win. The freshman went 4-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run and three runs scored. Virginia got 15 hits in the game, including three home runs on the way to the doubleheader sweep.

Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up the win to improve to 3-8 on the season. She allowed one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in the outing.

Georgia Tech struck first in game two, getting a two-out home run from Courtney Ziese that put the Yellow Jackets on top 1-0.

The lead was short lived as Osherow hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field, that put the Cavaliers in front 2-1. Ingraham scored on the play after reaching on an error in the previous at bat to keep the inning alive for Osherow.

Back-to-back walks of Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) and Chapdelaine put two more runners on base before Arneson delivered an RBI single to left for the 3-1 lead after the top of the second. 

The lead continued to grow in the third inning as Virginia got an RBI single from Ingraham off the wall in center. Virginia would go on to load the bases before Labshere would bring home another run with her own RBI single. A wild pitch then brought a third home run in the inning before a walk would load the bases again. 

Arneson delivered a hit off the wall in right center to bring a fourth run home, but a rundown put another out on the board. Fitzgerald then delivered a two-RBI single and the Cavaliers took the lead out to 9-1 after three innings of play.

Ingraham hit her second home run of the afternoon in the fourth inning and Virginia’s lead grew to 10-1 over the Yellow Jackets. Arneson followed it up with a three-run shot of her own as Virginia took the lead to 13-1 through four innings of play.

Virginia secured the weekend series as Smith and the defense held Georgia Tech off the board again in the fifth inning and claimed the doubleheader.
