TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 4 seed Virginia picked up victory number two in the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Tournament with a 2-1 upset over top-seeded North Carolina this evening at Lady Seminole Field. Virginia is now 37-26 while UNC falls to 30-19.
As in game one, the Cavaliers jumped to a first-inning advantage and never relinquished the lead. Two Tar Heel errors contributed to the two UVA runs. Each team recorded just three hits in the game. Virginia's Stacy Zagol earned her second victory of the day on the mound and improved to 18-12. She struck out 10 Carolina batters in seven innings of work. Offensively for the Tar Heels, catcher Carrie Bates was 2-for-2, including a double, and drove in UNC's lone run.
Virginia will play Florida State tomorrow at 5 p.m. while North Carolina will play a 7 p.m. contest vs. the winner of Georgia Tech/Maryland, who play at 3 p.m.
