LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville (27-17, 10-7 ACC) scored four runs in the sixth inning in a 7-5, come-from-behind victory over Virginia (21-30, 8-14 ACC). The loss for the Cavaliers snapped an ACC-best, seven-game win streak.
Virginia owned a 5-3 advantage going into bottom of the sixth before Louisville scored four runs on five hits to recapture the lead. The Cavaliers got the tying run to second base in the top half of the seventh but Cardinal pitcher Megan Hensley retired the final three batters of the game to earn her second save of the season.
Solo home runs in consecutive frames by Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) put the Cavaliers up 5-3 after five and half innings. Park tied game at three with her ninth home run of the season in top of the fourth and Ingraham hit the go-ahead shot off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth to put Virginia ahead, 6-5. Smith then gave the Cavaliers a two-run cushion with her eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth.
Senior Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) got Virginia out to a 2-0 lead on a bases-loaded, two-run single in the top of the second that scored McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) and Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.). The Cardinals erased a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the third with a three-run, six-hit rally.
One of the six Louisville hits in the third was a solo home run off the bat of Tiarra Sanabria, her second long ball of the season. Five Cardinals put forth multi-hit efforts including Hensley who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. The 13 Louisville hits marked the 19th time a Virginia opponent has collected 10 or more hits in a game.
Virginia will look to even the series in the middle game of the three-game series tomorrow (April 29) at 1 p.m.
