TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—The Virginia softball team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference Championship quarterfinal against NC State, 7-0, Thursday afternoon (May 9) at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla. The Cavaliers finish the season with a 21-28 record.

Emily Weiman (29-16) pitched a shutout for the Wolfpack (31-18-1), allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, the Wolfpack loaded the bases with no outs, but senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) only allowed one run on a sacrifice fly by Scout Albertson.

NC State added insurance in the fifth, when Renada Davis hit a two-run home run to left and Hanna Sommer doubled to score Chelsea Tate to give NC State a 4-0 lead.

Davis hit her second home run of the day and 26th of the season in the sixth, a three-run shot, to extend the lead to 7-0.

Virginia’s best chance to score was in the seventh, when seniors Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) and Lauren Didlake (Bowling Green, Va.) both walked and sophomore Peyton Larus (Midlothian, Va.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but Weiman induced a fly out to end the game.

Mitchell (16-17) struck out five in six innings and finishes her collegiate career as the fourth ACC pitcher to earn 1,100 strikeouts (1,101 total), joining Angela Tincher (VT 2005-08), Jessica Sallinger (GT 2002-05) and Crystal Cox (UNC 2003-06). She also finishes as the UVa career leader in wins (79), complete games (117), innings pitched (942.0), starts (144) and appearances (161).
