CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team heads to Rock Hill, S.C., this weekend for the Winthrop Combat Invitational Friday through Sunday (March 1-3).

The Cavaliers are scheduled to play Rhode Island and Winthrop on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., Hartford and UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and Furman on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Last weekend, UVa (6-7) went 2-3 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Cavaliers defeated San Diego State and Colorado State, but fell to Washington, Oregon and Stanford.

Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the squad with a .278 batting average, while senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) is 5-3 with a 1.62 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 56 innings of work.

Mitchell has 895 career strikeouts and is 37 shy of UVa’s all-time leader, Michelle Collins, who has 932. She is also two shy of third-place in program history in career wins with 68.

The Cavaliers have their home debut Wednesday (March 6) with a doubleheader against Seton Hall starting at 2 p.m. UVa opens the ACC schedule next weekend at home against Georgia Tech March 9-10.
