Game Notes
Weekend Recap: No. 1 Florida State came away with a three-game sweep in this past weekend’s Atlantic Coast Conference series. It marked the first time a top-ranked team visited Charlottesville. The Cavaliers managed seven hits in four innings on FSU starting pitcher Jessica Burroughs in Friday night’s opener.  Burroughs came back on Sunday and held the Cavaliers hitless over six innings in a 10-0, run-rule victory.

Do-Over: Virginia will travel to Longwood for the second year in-a-row after splitting a double dip in Farmville last season. After falling 7-1 in game one, the Cavaliers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Danni Ingraham hit the go-ahead home run in the frame and Allison Davis added to the lead with a two-run double for the eventual 6-3 win. Lacy Smith tossed a complete game, struck out three and earned her second career victory to help the Cavaliers salvage a split.

500-Win Club: Longwood head coach Kathy Riley is the third-straight opposing coach the Cavaliers have faced who has more than 500 career wins. She is in her 20th season at Longwood and owns a career record of 707-416-1. The Cavaliers squared off against Towson’s Lisa Costello (602 wins) and Florida State’s Lonni Alameda (559 wins) last week.

Common Opponent: After splitting a doubleheader against Virginia last Tuesday (March 21), Towson dropped two games against Longwood the very next day in Farmville. The Lancers captured game one (8-2) and hung on in the nightcap (5-4) to complete the sweep.

Seeing Doubles: Going into Tuesday, Virginia ranks third in the ACC with 52 doubles. In the Florida State series, Kaitlin Fitzgerald, Oliva Gott and Madison Labshere were responsible for three of the four two-baggers. Seven different players have four or more doubles for the Cavaliers in 2017.

Hit Leader: Junior Allison Davis leads the team and is tied for seventh in the ACC with 38 hits. She also leads the Cavaliers in batting average (.358), runs (19), triples (3) and stolen bases (3).

Up Next: Virginia returns to ACC play this weekend with a three-game series against North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Friday’s series opener is slated for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
