CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia (11-22, 2-10 ACC) will be on the road this weekend for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series against North Carolina (27-8, 7-2 ACC) in Chapel Hill. The series opener on Friday night (March 31) has a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
Game Coverage: All three games will air on ACC Network Extra, which is available to authenticated subscribers of ESPN3 through WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Live stats will be available on UNCLivestats.com.
-Friday will be the 115th meeting between North Carolina and Virginia.
-Virginia has played 114 games against North Carolina, the most against any single opponent.
-Last year Virginia took two out of three against UNC for the first time since 2010.
-The Tar Heels have won six-straight against Virginia in Chapel Hill.
-Virginia is looking to snap a six-game winless streak, its longest of the season.
Close Calls: The Cavaliers were on the short end of two pitchers’ duels and suffered two, one-run losses at Longwood on Tuesday (March 28). Virginia was limited to just six hits and the Longwood pitching duo of Sydney Gay and Elizabeth McCarthy combined for 16 strikeouts. The Lancers secured a 1-0 victory in game one and completed the sweep with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Counter Punch: Virginia starting pitchers Erika Osherow and Lexi Mettler also put together stellar outings in the circle by combining for just three earned runs and six hits allowed in 12 innings pitched. Osherow started game one and went the distance for her fifth complete game of the season. In the nightcap, Mettler retired 10-straight batters at one point and allowed just two Lancer hits.
Looking Back: Virginia captured its first series victory over North Carolina since 2010 by taking two out of three in Charlottesville last season. After splitting the Saturday doubleheader, the Cavaliers held off a late Tar Heel rally in a 3-2 win on Sunday. Osherow tossed a complete game, struck out two and allowed one earned run in her 12th career win.
For Three: On Tuesday against Longwood, junior Allison Davis matched a career-high by recording her fourth triple of the season. Her four three-baggers are tied for the second most in the ACC.
Back-to-Back Thefts: Senior Iyana Hughes swiped a base in each game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and moved into the team lead with four. The Cavaliers have six stolen bases in their last 11 games after collecting just four over the first 22 games.
All-Even: With two, one-run losses on Tuesday, Virginia is now 5-5 in one-run games this season. A total of 17 of the team’s 33 games in 2017 have been decided by three runs or less.
