Virginia was limited to just six hits and the Longwood pitching duo of Sydney Gay and Elizabeth McCarthy combined for 16 strikeouts. The Lancers secured a 1-0 victory in game one and completed the sweep with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Counter Punch: Virginia starting pitchers Erika Osherow and Lexi Mettler also put together stellar outings in the circle by combining for just three earned runs and six hits allowed in 12 innings pitched. Osherow started game one and went the distance for her fifth complete game of the season. In the nightcap, Mettler retired 10-straight batters at one point and allowed just two Lancer hits.
Looking Back: Virginia captured its first series victory over North Carolina since 2010 by taking two out of three in Charlottesville last season. After splitting the Saturday doubleheader, the Cavaliers held off a late Tar Heel rally in a 3-2 win on Sunday. Osherow tossed a complete game, struck out two and allowed one earned run in her 12th career win.
For Three: On Tuesday against Longwood, junior Allison Davis matched a career-high by recording her fourth triple of the season. Her four three-baggers are tied for the second most in the ACC.
Back-to-Back Thefts: Senior Iyana Hughes swiped a base in each game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and moved into the team lead with four. The Cavaliers have six stolen bases in their last 11 games after collecting just four over the first 22 games.
All-Even: With two, one-run losses on Tuesday, Virginia is now 5-5 in one-run games this season. A total of 17 of the team’s 33 games in 2017 have been decided by three runs or less.
