CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia softball team (26-24, 8-13 ACC) earned the No. 6 seed in the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship and will face No. 3 seed Georgia Tech in the first game of the event at 12 p.m. Thursday at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium. The matchup will be televised live by the ACC's Regional Sports Network and live statistics will be linked on VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia returns to action after an eight day break for final exams. The Cavaliers defeated George Mason (5-1) May 1 in the regular season finale and ended on a strong note, winning five of their last six games.

Virginia will meet Georgia Tech (33-21, 12-8 ACC) for the second consecutive year at the ACC Championship. In 2011, UVa became the first No. 8 seed to upset the top seed with a 6-0 win over the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Virginia has won four straight against Georgia Tech after earning a sweep in its first series matchup earlier this year.

The Cavaliers claimed their only ACC championship in 1994 and fifth-year head coach Eileen Schmidt was a member of that team. Virginia has also been the runner-up in the tournament six times, most recently in 2003.

UVa was one of four ACC schools to play in the inaugural league tournament in 1992, along with Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Since then, the Cavaliers have compiled an all-time ACC Championship record of 28-36.

The winner of the Virginia-Georgia Tech matchup will take on the winner of the No. 2 Florida State vs. No. 7 NC State game, which will be played at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The first semifinal game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday on RSN and the championship game is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday and will be televised on ESPN.
