Softball Lands Two on ACC All-Conference Squad

May 11, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned First Team All-ACC honors while classmate Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) was listed on the second team. It was the first time the Cavaliers received multiple selections since 2010.

Park finished the regular season as the team leader in batting average (.383), runs (34), hits (67), doubles (12) and total bases (110). Her 67 hits were the fifth most in the ACC and tied for the eighth most in a single season in Virginia history. She takes a career-best, 12-game hit streak into the postseason and reached safely in her final 14 regular season games. In ACC play she batted a staggering .412 (35-for-85), scored 19 runs and belted five home runs.

Fitzgerald, a 2014 All-Big East selection as a freshman at St. John’s, elevated her game as a senior in conference play, batting .391 (25-for-64) with six doubles and 15 RBIs. She produced walk-off hits against Virginia Tech (March 4) and Georgia Tech (April 15). In the series sweep against Notre Dame, she compiled eight hits, including four in the series finale. She struck out once in her first 68 at bats is the ACC’s third-toughest batter to strikeout.

Park becomes the first Cavalier since Melanie Mitchell in 2010 to garner First Team All-ACC honors. Virginia has now had a student-athlete recognized back-to-back seasons with Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) earning a second team nod in 2016.
