LYNCHBURG, Va.--Virginia softball senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell and junior third baseman Marcy Bowdren have been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors' All-State University Division First Team, VaSID announced Friday (June 14).

It is Mitchell's third all-state honor and Bowdren's first. Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) was named the VaSID All-State Pitcher of the Year in 2010 and was recognized on the first team in 2010 and 2012.

Mitchell, who was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team, finished her career as UVa's all-time leader in wins (79), strikeouts (1,101), complete games (117), innings pitched (942), appearances (161) and starts (144).

This season, Mitchell finished at 16-17 with a 2.74 ERA and 270 strikeouts in 217.0 innings pitched. The 270 strikeouts rank sixth-most in UVa single-season history, rank 16th in the nation this year in total strikeouts and logged 11 double-digit strikeouts games.

Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) led the Cavaliers with a .309 batting average, 47 hits and 26 runs and was second on the team with 23 RBI and four home runs. Bowdren was the sixth-toughest hitter to strikeout in the nation, averaging 38.0 at-bats per strikeout.
