UVa Tennis Teams Receive Bids to NCAA Regional Tournaments
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Virginia men's and women's tennis teams have each received bids to the 1997 NCAA Tournament.
For the Virginia men's team, the bid marks the first invitation to the NCAA Tournament in school history. The Cavaliers will face South Carolina on May 9 in the eight-team Region II tournament on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta. The match time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Virginia, ranked 34th in the current rankings, is 15-8 this season. South Carolina is ranked 26th in the latest ranking and has a 15-9 record this season. This is the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Gamecocks defeated Virginia 6-1 earlier this season.
The winner of the the Region II tournament advances to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at UCLA on May 17-20.
The bid for the Virginia women's team is its second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and the fourth in the last five seasons. The Cavaliers face Harvard on May 9 in the eight-team East Region tournament at Brown University in Providence, R.I. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Cavaliers are ranked 50th in the current rankings with a 9-11 record this season. Harvard is 17-5 this season and is ranked 24th nationally.
The winner of the East Region tournament advances to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at Stanford University on May 15-18.
