Virginia Completes Day One Action at Winter Invitational

The No. 11 Virginia women's tennis team opened its spring season Saturday by hosting the eighth annual UVa Winter Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers competed against No. 13 Northwestern as individuals in singles and doubles action, as no team scoring is being used during the invitational.

Virginia claimed two doubles wins and one singles victory against the Wildcats. No. 10 Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) defeated Veronica Corning and Belinda Niu at No. 2 doubles. Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) added an 8-3 win over Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk and Kate Turvy at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) beat the Wildcats' Linda Abu Mushrefova 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles for UVa's lone singles victory.

Virginia will compete against No. 23 Tennessee on Sunday. The action begins at 10 a.m. at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The public is welcome free of charge.
