Virginia Enjoys Sunday Action Against Tennessee at Winter Invite

Li Xi won in three sets at No. 4 singles.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 11 Virginia claimed six singles wins and a pair of doubles victories against No. 23 Tennessee Sunday at the eighth annual UVa Winter Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

No. 4 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), No. 43 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), No. 44 Li Xi (Kunming, China), Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.), Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) each claimed singles wins against the Lady Volunteers.

Elbaba beat No. 23 Brynn Boren 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and Nauta beat Joanna Henderson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

Xi grinded out a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Mimi Fotopolous at No. 4 singles, while Vierra claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tiffany Tavares at No. 5 singles.

Tomljanovic beat Sarah Toti 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and Fuccillo defeated Kayla McMurray 6-3, 6-1 at No. 7.

No. 5 Vierra and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) beat No. 41 Caitlyn Williams and Henderson, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Elbaba and Tomljanovic added an 8-0 win over Tavares and Fotopolous at No. 3 doubles.

The Cavaliers complete play at the individual singles and doubles invitational against No. 34 Utah on Monday, while No. 13 Northwestern battles No. 23 Tennessee. The action begins at 9 a.m. at the Boar's Head Sports Club and the public is welcome free of charge.
