CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 13 Virginia women's tennis team swept all 12 of its singles and doubles matches against No. 39 VCU and Marshall in final-day action of the UVa Winter Invitational Monday (Jan. 20) at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers went 8-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles against the Rams and Thundering Herd. Virginia went 21-3 in singles and 16-2 in doubles to dominate the three-day tournament.
Virginia's Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) won singles championship with a 5-0 record and teamed with Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) to post a 5-0 mark en route to the doubles title. Tennessee's No. 53 Eve Repic place second in singles and Sarah Pham finished third.
Posting singles wins for Virginia against VCU were No. 11 Elbaba, No. 28 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), No. 43 Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) and No. 85 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas).
Virginia's No. 8 tandem of Elbaba and Pierson completed its undefeated tournament with a 6-2 win over Marshall's Dana Oppinger and Derya Turhan. Collins and Xi, Epstein and Peretz and Faure and Nauta added doubles wins.
The Cavaliers return to dual action against No. 39 VCU on Friday, Jan. 31.
